APPLY FOR LEARNER'S PERMIT

Students may apply for a learner’s permit within 10 days of the first day of a driver’s education course.

If the student ALREADY HAS a Washington State ID Card,

  1. Email the ID number to the traffic safety instructor and wait 48 hours. (Click here for the list of instructors and contact information.)
  2. Parent and student then go to a DOL office to have them convert it to a learner's permit. Cost is $25. Student must bring two forms of ID.*

If the student DOES NOT have a Washington State ID Card,

  1. Visit the DOL website.
  2. Click on pre-apply online.
  3. When you’re ready, click Pre-apply under number 3 to fill out the form.
  4. After you’ve completed the form, you’ll receive a confirmation number.
  5. Email the confirmation number to the traffic safety instructor and wait 48 hours. (Click here for the list of instructors and contact information.)
  6. Parent and student then go to a DOL office to receive the learner's permit. Cost is $25. Student must bring two forms of ID.*

* DOL accepts the following forms of ID. Bring two:

  • Certified birth certificate
  • Military photo ID
  • Passport
  • Washington state ID card
  • School yearbook with recognizable photo
  • Social Security card with student’s signature
